Poole Harbour welcomes PS Waverley

Poole Harbour welcomes PS Waverley – world's last passenger paddle steamer

The last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world arrived in Poole on Monday and is welcoming passengers onboard for cruises to the Isle of Wight.

The vessel has not visited Poole since 2018 and has had a major refurbishment in that time, thanks to public fundraising. Built in 1946 to replace its 1899 namesake, which was sunk by enemy action in 1940 at Dunkirk, the steamer is named after Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels.

Poole Harbour Master, Captain Brian Murphy, said: “It is an absolute pleasure to welcome the PS Waverley back to Poole Harbour and to see her back on Town Quay, providing an incredible experience for visitors to the quay and passengers alike.”

Though today is Waverley’s last day in Poole, she is remaining on the south coast for another week, with sailings planned from Southampton, Yarmouth, Swanage and Portsmouth.
