REVIEW: How to achieve naturally looking white teeth with Penn Hill Dental

Introduction to Teeth Whitening

"Mummy, your teeth look yellow". Never of truer a phrase than "out of the mouth of babes!".

Until my 5-year-old kindly pointed out that my teeth were yellow, I hadn't previously given much thought about the shade of my teeth and thought they were okay for a 40-year-old. But this statement got me a little paranoid.

Thankfully we have a very friendly dentist and when I laughingly mentioned this to Michael on my last check-up and explained I didn't want the fake 'Ross Geller' from friends look, he explained that there was a method where you can personally control how many shades whiter you go - with the home whitening trays.

He explained that unfortunately no amount of teeth whiteness toothpaste will make a difference (my love of red wine and coffee has obviously taken hold!) and that one of the most effective ways to achieve results is through bleach teeth whitening.

Understanding Home Bleaching

Michael explained the method we would be using which was the home bleaching kit; a convenient and effective method of teeth whitening that you can do in the comfort of your own home. It involves using custom-made teeth whitening trays and a professional-grade bleaching gel.

The process is simple and easy to follow. First off, Michael's team took a digital impression of my teeth to create customized trays that fit perfectly. This process was really quick and effective. By having a digital impression rather than a mould, you achieve a much more accurate 3D record. It assesses the way the teeth meet together making it highly accurate.

After just 2 days, the moulds had arrived, and I collected my teeth whitening pack which included the moulds which are trays designed to hold the bleaching gel against your teeth while minimizing contact with your gums, the bleach syringes, an information pack, a toothbrush and sensitive toothpaste. Michael took the time to go through the steps I would need to take and to just evaluate the shades each day to decide when to stop the process.

The Process of Teeth Whitening at Home

I had decided to do the overnight whitening rather than 4 hours during the day as I do a lot of talking at work! But I was a little worried about them being uncomfortable and affecting my sleep. I was also concerned that because I already have sensitive teeth, this would be exacerbated. But neither was an issue.

The process was really simple; just before bed I would wash out the trays and pop a blob of bleach in each individually marked area for each tooth (I didn't bother with the back teeth), the trays are designed to fit snugly over your teeth, preventing leakage and minimizing contact with your gums. This is essential because the bleaching gel can cause gum irritation if it comes into direct contact with them.

I popped the trays in and woke up each morning with teeth a few shades whiter.

Your mouth does feel a little strange in the morning, but a quick rinse and brush of the teeth soon fixes it and apart from having whiter teeth you wouldn't know you had just bleached your teeth.

The results

Thanks to the advancements in cosmetic dentistry, achieving a dazzling smile has never been more accessible.

The initial results weren't dramatic, and it took about 3 nights to start to see a real difference. I stopped on the fifth night as I wanted a more natural look but I still have the trays so I can always order more bleach if I feel the need to top up as you can continue to use the trays periodically to touch up any future staining and keep your smile looking bright.

The results are long-lasting and even after a cup of coffee, my teeth still look sparkling white. Suffice to say, my daughter is very happy with the results.
