£1.1 million has been awarded to support people walking and cycling across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

As part of the second phase of government’s active travel fund, an additional £1.1 million has been awarded to BCP Council to provide improvements to local walking and cycling infrastructure.

The funding will invested by the council to give people more opportunities to choose cycling and walking for their day-to-day journeys. This forms part of wider government plans to boost active travel in the country. By increasing the number of active journeys made locally, residents will be able to experience and enjoy the benefits to health, air quality and reduction in congestion that follow.

Councillor Mike Greene, Portfolio Holder responsible for transport, BCP Council, said;

“This is great news for our conurbation and we will be using this funding to encourage more local people to choose walking, cycling and public transport options. As we progress with new plans to improve air quality and support people towards healthier and more active lifestyles, we will ensure that proper consultation and engagement with the community takes place ahead of any future changes.’’

A total of £1.4 million in active travel funding has been allocated to BCP Council, with an initial £312,000 already delivered as part of phase one. To help improve existing schemes, resident are able to provide feedback and make suggestions via the council website.
