Five gentle walks along the Dorset coast perfect for all the family

The Dorset coast is one of the most beautiful spots in the country and there’s a host of walks to be enjoyed now we’re welcoming the spring and summer months.

Some of those walks are challenging, while some are much more gentle, suitable for people of all ages. Which is just as well, with it being the time of year we all love to get out a little more with the family, whether it be little ones taking their first steps towards Old Harry Rocks or our grandparents, taking them out of senior care homes for the day and creating new memories.

So, if you’re looking to find a gentle walk along the coast over the coming months, here are five we’d certainly recommend…

Swanage to Studland

Beginning in Swanage, this scenic walk takes in a picturesque path towards the gorgeous Studland Bay. It’s one of the best spots to enjoy views of the Jurassic Coast, taking in Old Harry Rocks as well as a host of sandy beaches and heathland.

It’s a flat walk, which makes it well suited to people of all ages and a great family outing. The only thing we need to add is don’t forget to take the picnic basket!

Lulworth Cove Circular Walk

One of the true natural wonders of Great Britain, Lulworth Cove offers crystal clear waters and a nice circular walk around the cove, stretching from the South West Coast Path to the famous Durdle Door.

It’s an easy walk with well-maintained paths. And, of course, after the walk you can pop into Lulworth itself to enjoy a well earned cup of cream tea and a snack.

Weymouth Esplanade to Bowleaze Cove

Weymouth is a fantastic town to base yourself in if you’re only visiting Dorset and the walk to Bowleaze Cove is flat and ideal for people with mobility aids or children in pushchairs.

Ending up in Bowleaze Cove, it’s a great stop to relax and look out over the sea, and should be completed with some fish and chips, or at the very least an ice cream!

Charmouth to Lyme Regis Fossil Walk

For more of an educational and exciting family adventure, take on the Charmouth to Lyme Regis fossil walk. This walk takes you along the fossil-rich beaches of the Jurassic Coast, where you can hunt for ancient fossils embedded in the cliffs and rocks. Led by experienced

fossil guides, this walk is not only fun but also educational, offering insights into the area's geological history. Make sure to wear sturdy footwear and check tide times before setting out.

West Bay to Burton Bradstock

Starting at West Bay, a place known for its towering sandstone cliffs and enchanting harbour, you can follow the South West Coast Path over towards the lovely village of Burton Bradstock.

Along the journey you’ll find the iconic Golden Cap, the highest point along the south coast, as well as some fantastic hidden coves to enjoy a pitstop. There are a few inclines on this walk, but they aren’t too difficult to navigate and it’s a great option for the family to really immerse themselves in the coastline’s natural beauty.
