REVIEW: Jenkins & Sons

Jenkins & Sons is both prominent and a hidden gem at the same time with its prime position on the main road through Penn Hill in Poole.

The recent renovation and the addition of that insta-worthy telephone box out the front meant that the place was packed as we arrived at 6.30pm for our dinner reservation. It was so good to see people sitting in groups inside and out, catching up with friends over drinks or settling down to see what the new menu has to offer.

The atmosphere was loud and vibrant, which did mean that it was a little hard to hear the server at times, but it added to the fun vibe that Jenkins & Sons have down to a tee. We were given a little time to look over the menu, although I had already spotted what I wanted from my website stalking the night before (please tell me I’m not the only one to do this), and we were soon served our drinks - a house bottle of white wine which went down a treat after a long week at work, and bread and oils to share whilst we waited on the rest of our food and soaked up that atmosphere.

For starters, we went for tapas style sharing plates with the Sicilian Arancini Balls, Katsu Chicken Bites and Rainbow Fish Taco - a new dish which was personally recommended to us by the manager and certainly did not disappoint - the colours were as fresh as the ingredients and it was my favourite from the evening! We had a little time to appreciate the decor of the restaurant space whilst we waited on our mains - I love the foliage and lights, giving the illusion of al-fresco dining whilst safely inside away from the pesky insects that love to join you as summer approaches.

Our mains arrived and we were impressed with the serving sizes, you may want to unbutton those jeans if you are planning on leaving room for dessert! I had the Indonesian Yellow Island Curry, which was really tasty, with a kick to it without being overpowering on the spice levels, whilst the Sticky Pork Ribs were also superbly cooked. The menu is varied, with something for everyone, from sharers to speciality burgers and wood-fired pizzas to a mouth-watering selection of a la carte dishes.

We somehow managed to squeeze in desserts and boy am I glad we did - the Sticky Toffee Pudding and Brownie were gooey, served with ice cream and just what you need to finish off such a fantastic meal. The staff were welcoming, the atmosphere was electric. For a post work drink, meal with loved ones or celebratory gathering, Jenkins & Sons is the place to be.
